The Anna Byars Band formed in the fall of 2002 when the idea of adding a rhythm section to Anna’s solo show began to take root. Anna felt that by including drums and bass with her intense songwriting she could deepen the impact of her emotive lyrics and finely crafted melodies. She approaches songwriting and performance with a vigorous background in classical guitar, a profound appreciation for all the usual folk heroes, and good old fashioned swank
Here’s a little information about the boys Anna calls her husbands:
Jeff Shoji (bass): Jeff began playing bass sometime in college, using his love of prog rock to spur his musical education foreward. Anna was drawn to his style initially because of his lack of training in the folk genre. his graceful and intuitive playing serves to underscore the subtleties in anna’s writing. In addition to playing with Anna and Tim, he is usually working on any number of solo projects.
Tim Marchiafava (drums): Tim’s musical career began on the violin at a young age. His percussive training, however, began much later. While having never studied the drums formally, his previous classical training gives him the ability to adapt to different genres easily. Tim is an avid student of the drums these days, and has taken up an intensive informal curriculum. You can also hear him playing with baton rouge bands “Elsah” and “Arvy”.
