He is best known as one of the innovators of outlaw country. His 1973 album, Old Five and Dimers Like Me is considered a classic album of the genre. He has written songs for Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Willie Nelson and The Highwaymen, among many others. Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson have also performed his songs.
He has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and has been inducted into Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and the Americana Music Convention awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting.
